Correspondence of Leander Thompson, 1840-1841.

Two long letters written by teacher and missionary for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to Rev. Eli Moody, Granby, Mass. First letter (16 p.), dated "Jerusalem December 9 1840", contains a "journal of some common incidents of every day" describing Thompson's trip from Jerusalem to Beirut, Syria (now Lebanon). Second letter (17 p.) consists of five sections: 1st page has "Arayeb Aug 27 1841" to "parents" from Leander Thompson explaining that this letter contains writing samples from some of his students, etc., pages 2-4 has a short letter written by student Gregory Mortabet dated "Beirout Aug 27 1841", pages 4 & 7-17 are by Thompson provides an account of his experiences in Beirut, pages 5-6 has a short letter written by student Naseef Shedudy, and pages 10-11 has a short letter written by student John Mortabet dated "Arayuke Mt. Lebanon Aug 30 1841". Includes typescript transcription.

Leander Thompson was born March 7 1812 Woburn MA. He graduated from Andover Theological Seminary in 1838. He was a missionary in Syria for the American Board of Foreign Missions from 1840-1844. He was elected a member of NEHGS in 1887 and became a life member in 1890. He died 18 October 1896 Woburn MA [Memoir in Register 51:83].
